HIT THE WALL by Ike Holter
It’s the early hours of June 28, 1969 when a routine police raid on The Stonewall Inn, a popular underground gay bar in Greenwich Village, sparks a full-scale riot. Violent protests and street demonstrations continued for the next several days in what became known as The Stonewall Riots, thrusting a group of unlikely revolutionaries onto the frontlines of history and igniting one of the most influential social and political movements of the 20th Century. It focuses on that wild and enigmatic first night of the riots, placing the audience just on the periphery of the conflict. An imaginative blend of history and mythology, it shines a contemporary light on the legacy of Stonewall.

CHARACTERS (ages are suggestions and other age ranges may be considered, do not let that keep you from auditioning)

A-GAY
Late 20’s, early 30’s. Attractive, white, smooth talking Harvard Grad who can pass for straight. A clipped, uncaring vampire with a great closing argument.

NEWBIE
Early 20’s. Fresh. Queer, white. Not only knows where the party is; he leads it.

CARSON
Late 20’s, early 30’s. Black, strong and silent type with a hidden cache of bitch-isms that could clear a room. Sticks to his morals till they’re pried from his fingers.

PEG
Late 20’s, early 30’s. White, butch lesbian, could possibly pass for a man. Spits out words like hand grenades; nearly at the breaking point.

CLIFF
Late 20’s, early 30’s. White, drifter type, drunk on hope with a half-pound of amazing weed in his backpack. Would probably be considered bi-sexual.

ROBERTA
30’s. Strong, black. The most well dressed and educated Freedom Fighting Hustler you can think of.

TANO
Late 20’s, early 30’s. Puerto Rican, half of the “Snap Queen Team”, fiercely territorial, able to cut a bitch in half with a single wit.

MIKA
Late 20’s, early 30’s. Black, the other half of the “Snap Queen Team”. Not as fast as Tano, but probably smarter. Tells it like it is, calls it like he sees it; sees the glitz and glamour through tinted shades.

COP
40’s – 50’s. White. Good ol’ Boy just trying to do right by the law. Has never questioned the “Right” or “Wrong” behind what he’s ordered to do. Amazing at the intimidation factor of his job.

MADELINE
30’s. White, Peg’s sister. Has no business being at the riot because she must host a brunch in the morning and has no time for civil rights or emotional outbursts. Secret smoker, terrible driver, has-had-enough.

Actors must be available for all performances.

Conflicts with the rehearsal schedule will be considered.

Small stipend will be paid at the conclusion of the performance run.
